Ch 5 - Equal Rights Amendment

What was the 'equal rights amendment'?
Explain if it should have been ratified by the states?

  1. The Equal Rights amendment is an act that states all rights listed in the constitution apply to every citizen regardless of their sex. I believe that the equal rights amendment should have been ratified by all of the states because it was an important step and making a fair environment for all of the citizens in the United States.

    1. I agree and think that the Equal Rights Amendment should have been ratified by the states. The ERA was first introduced in Congress in 1923. Only three years earlier had women finally gained the right to vote. During this time, America was very patriarchal. Men dominated in everything from jobs, the government, to education. The ERA was open for ratification 49 years later in 1972. Ratifying the ERA would have allowed large gains for equality for women during this time and in the future. Still do this day, men and women are not equal despite numerous efforts to change this.

  2. I agree that the 'equal rights amendment' should have been ratified by the states. Women are not a protected class. For example, men earn more money then women do working the same job. Also gender rating exists when insurance companies determine what to charge a customer. Women tend to always pay a higher premium than men. Under the equal rights amendment women would not be subject to these discriminations and more. Truly making men and women equal.

    1. In general, the middle class supported the Equal Rights Amendment, and the working class and labor unions opposed it. The Hayden Rider also made ERA supporters oppose the amendment because they felt that the Hayden Rider did not provide for equality. The ratification of this amendment was only a few states shy of the required 38 states and, therefore, did not pass.
