  1. The wage gap is a phenomena or an observation that is the difference in earnings between men and women of the same job and skill. For example, a male telemarketer may make $50,000 a year while a woman in the same workplace, same experience, and education might make something like $40,000 a year. There are some theories on why a wage gap exists, one of these theories is that men are more aggressive when it comes to negotiating pay. While women are more likely to accept there pay and are not as likely to ask for a raise. Another reason the wage gap might exist is simply because women are being discriminated against just because they are women. Some people think that women are less, "qualified" for doing jobs that men have or simply not, "able" to. In the future I can see the wage gap disappearing in the future because of people who are coming forward about inequality and attention this is getting from the rest of the country.

  2. I agree that there is a theory the wage gap exists because men can be more aggressive in negotiating pay, whereas women are more likely to accept what pay they receive, rather than ask for a raise. But, some women go into jobs that pay less than jobs that some men go into that pay more (education vs. engineering).

    1. ) I believe that the wage gap exists because men are intimidated by women. Many men feel uncomfortable if their significant other makes more money than them. Throughout history, men are taught that they should be providing for their family; working while women stayed home. However, women have stepped up to the plate and proved that they too can be bread-winners. This makes some men uncomfortable and some feel less masculine with their significant other making more money. The wage gap exists in order to keep women from making more money than their husbands because women are supposed to be weaker than men and less able to provide. I believe the wage gap will be gone once we see each other as equals and stop being so closed minded about women in the workforce.

    2. I disagree with Avery, I believe that wage gap exists because of negotiations. I do not think that men get paid more because they are intimidated by women. I feel that the idea that men men feel inferior to women if paid less than their female counterpart is stereotypical. Personally, If my future wife makes more money because of me for being a doctor and I make less because I'm a teacher then I would be fine with it. I understand why men would want to be the provider of the family, but I also don't think that is why we have a wage gap between males and females.

    3. I do understand where Avery is coming from, but I don't believe it's a intentional reason. I think the wage gap exists because that's the way its always been. Men as well as Women tend to look over the way things have always been, but with the recent revival of feminism once again I see the wage gap getting smaller and smaller. I do believe there is intentional discrimination in the workplace against women. I can say I'm not eagerly awaiting the day when I work just as hard and make less than a man, simply because its the way things have always been. I do have hope that it'll change. While I have heard the commentary tossed around of maternity leave, negotiating, and the type of jobs men and women tend to go in I personally do not believe any of these should make the pay gap unequal in the same job position.

  3. Another theory is that the wage gap exists because women choose to care for children. People blame maternity leave and care giving as an excuse for getting paid less than men. Women don't ask to get paid less than men for doing the same work they did before giving birth. Also, many women workers' suggestions get dismissed, only to be discussed seriously by men. Men overlook women's communication styles and strengths simply because they are women. I think once people realize and see men and women as equals, then the wage gap will disappear.

    1. Melissa is right. A true possibility of the wage gap is because of moms wanting to take care of their family instead of focusing on their careers. And when these moms go back to work, there is age discrimination where businesses tend not to hire older persons due to education and experience or lack of experience because of choosing to be a stay at home mom. Also do not forget that another possibility of the wage gap can be because of the choices of careers men and women choose. Men typically choose a career of math and science such as engineering, and women tend to choose liberal arts careers such as art design that is not a high paying job like engineering. Type of career affects the wage gap.
