Ch 7 - The FCC

What does the FCC stand for? What the FCC do? In the age of cable TV, satellite TV and the internet is the FCC needed?

  1. The FCC stands for The Federal Communications Commission. The FCC regulates the content, nature, and very existence of radio and television broadcasting. In the age of cable TV, satellite TV and the internet, the FCC is not needed because this sort of governmental interference would violate the First Amendment if it were imposed on the print media. Another reason it is not needed is because while it's job is to restrict the content of programs with obscene words and scenes, there are many other ways to bypass those restrictions today. With all of the different ways to stream and view certain programs and videos today, the FCC cannot possibly regulate every single form of social media today. (Edwards 119-120)

    1. While I agree that the FCC couldn't possibly regulate all forms of social media I think it is still needed. I think that the FCC is needed so that there are restrictions on what is said on the radio and what is shown on the television. Young children listen to the radio and watch television, they are also becoming more and more involved with the internet at a younger age. I think that the FCC needs to regulate what is broadcasted so that there isn't a negative impact on children and teens across the country.

    2. I also agree that the FCC is unnecessary because in this day and age people can view anything. It is unnecessary because now that we live in the 21st century we don't need censorship. We don't need people to decide what we should and should not see because we can decide for ourselves. We don't need the FCC because we don't need to be protected by what the government thinks we can and cannot handle.

    3. I actually think that we really do need the FCC. Yes, as a technology dependent nation we can pretty much regulate what we want and don’t want to see on our own, but there are still background issues that require the aid of the FCC. Without a governing body controlling certain aspects of broadcast media, anyone could put out any sort of transmitter wave they desired. Anyone who wanted to could interrupt important broadcasts, ruining our vast communication system. Communication during an emergency would be extremely difficult since signals could be interrupted by anyone. The FCC makes sure that the public is safe and also deals with homeland security. They monitor internet activity and restrict violent and threatening content. In a world where terrorism is prominent and recruitment often occurs via social media, I think it is important for the FCC to help regulate activity and prevent harmful content from being published wherever possible.
