Ch 7 - The Role of The Internet

What has been the biggest impact of the internet on politics?

  1. I believe that the internet had impacted politics in many different ways. I think the biggest impact of internet on politics is the way that politicians and candidates reach their candidates. Before candidates had a harder time reaching people, and influencing people. The only ways were things like the newspaper, sit-in debates or watching debates on TV. I think that the internet has allowed candidates to have an easier way to be able to reach people. I think that the internet has also made it easier for candidates to bash each other. I think the internet has made elections more about the candidates and less about the issues and parties.

    1. While I very much agree that the internet has made it easier for candidates to reach the public, I think the biggest impact of the Internet is having more venues than ever to voice one's opinions. Political debate today has a much different meaning. Before the Internet, you had to write an opinion column in a newspaper or send a letter to have someone review and possibly be published in the newspapers. Nowadays, people can voice their opinions with one click of a mouse. With new social media outlets such as Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, and Google, people are constantly updating their statuses and displaying their opinion for the world to see about a particular candidate or policy. Posting a comment is now one of the easiest ways to make sure your opinion is heard and seen in today's age of technology. (Edwards 227-228).

    2. I agree with both of the statements above on how the internet has impacted politics. Another important impact of the internet on politics is that people now have an easier way of getting information on candidates to help them decide on who they think will represent our country the best. Candidates are finding new ways to get their platforms and ideas out to the public, they are also finding new ways to make negative advertisements about their opponents. When candidates create negative advertisements or even "tweet" something negative about another candidate it can sway the votes and change the opinions of the voters. I think that the Internet is a big resource that the people involved in politics can use to reach the public and get the outcomes they desire.

    3. I agree with Danielle, I think the internet has increased the amount of information people can get about policies. People are now able to go online to find candidate platforms, track record, and supporters of that candidate to better understand where they fit in the political world.

    4. The internet has also impacted politics by making it easy for people to stay caught up on politics. People can look at newspapers online about politics as well as watch videos about politics. If they miss an important political event they can get informed about it on social media. People can even watch videos of important political events through soundbites. The internet has been important in politics because people can use it as a resource to stay updated on politics all over the world.
