I believe mass media's main focus should be on getting unbiased news out to the watchers/listeners with correct information. I also feel mass media should cover political, social, and disasters of any kind. I think the whole point of the media is to get unbiased information out there to the people, and as long as the information is truthful I see no problem in reporting on any event the mass media source would like.
While I certainly think delivering unbiased news is an important thing to display to the media, I do think reporting different views on the same issues is just as important, if not more. For most people, they see things happening in the world, but never form an actual opinion on what they think of that. For the news to report on many different views or opinions of the same issues, it allows people to decide for themselves which one, if any, they agree with. Most importantly, it it allows people to see and understand someone else's opposite viewpoint. The main problem in today's world is forming opinions, but not understanding the opposite viewpoint. This way we can all understand and appreciate where the opposing opinion is coming from. (Edwards 235-241).
Delivering unbiased news and reporting different views are both important roles that mass media should focus on. In addition to those factors, I think that the mass media should focus more on a wider range of stories than just those that "cause drama." Yes, Americans are drawn to stories that include scandals and crime, but there are many other things that are important in the world that American is missing out on because of these drama filled stories. Many Americans aren't aware of many things regarding other nations and even things within our own nation. I think that it is important that the mass media includes other important events so that Americans can be more fully aware of what is actually going on around them.
I believe that mass media should focus on more world news. We need to educate ourselves not only on our national news but news from around the world. We should learn more about current events from other countries because it could help us embrace each other more instead of fighting with each other. If we take the time to learn about each other and keep up to date on political events in other countries it could help us understand each other better and understand the world a little better. The main thing that mass media should do is give us more information not just concerning our own country.
I agree that it should focus on world news, too often American's get caught up in what's going on in celebrities life, instead of crisis going on throughout countries living in poverty and desperation. It educates us on world news and keeps us away from paying attention to irrelevant things that don't benefit us.
