Why is the Kennedy- Nixon debate important when talking about the role of the media in campaigns?

  1. The Kennedy and Nixon debate was the first televised debate. The Kennedy-Nixon debates not only had a major impact on the election’s outcome, but helped come about a new era in which crafting a public image and taking advantage of media exposure became essential to a successful political campaign. Many people who watched the debate believed Kennedy won and the people who listened to it believed Nixon won. Kennedy was young, good looking, well put together and new how to capture the audience by looking at them when speaking and making sure he was well groomed. Nixon believed that his content was more important than his looks which ultimately lead to his defeat. Kennedy had the perfect family, and the perfect look which many people around the world took interest in. Most people believe that if Nixon would’ve been more cautious about his public appearance he could’ve won.

    1. I agree completely with Taylor, the Kennedy-Nixon debate was majorly impactful in the elections outcome. Nixon was sweaty and had little to no makeup on whereas Kennedy had makeup on and did not look washed out by the Television. On T.V. Kennedy did better because people were influenced with his look but Nixon did better through radio simply off of his ideas.

    2. I agree with both Madison and Taylor. Something to add though, is this is the first time that television media had a real impact on campaigns. I also think this sparked the idea that media has propelled a more candidate based campaign. As Madison commented, people were influenced by Nixon and Kennedy's looks. Before on the radio, no one payed attention to the aesthetics.
