What groups tend to be poor?
What is the 'feminization of poverty'?
How has poor among the elderly changed?

  1. The elderly used to have the highest rates of poverty in America. That changed after Social Security and other New Deal programs were passed in 1935 that gave many benefits to older Americans and helped pull the elderly out of poverty (Edwards 574).

    1. To add to Allison's comment, currently the groups that tend to be poor in the United States are ethnic and racial minorities such as African Americans and Hispanics. The elderly is no longer as poor as they once were because of Social Security programs like Medicare.

    2. Another group that is very poor is the Native Americans and Alaska Natives, they by far have the poorest living conditions. Some Alaskan homes and reservations compare to living conditions in third world countries. The majority of them living in shacks, with little resources to get food and forced to go back to prehistoric ties and hunt for food and find a way to store them. The majority of Alaskan natives barely have electricity in their homes due to being so isolated.

    1. In addition, it is also the "concept that describes the idea that women represent disproportionate percentages of the world's poor. UNIFEM describes it as "the burden of poverty borne by women, especially in developing countries"
