Ch 19 - Medicare and Medicaid

Should we eliminate Medicare?
Should we eliminate Medicaid?

  1. In my opinion we should not eliminate Medicare or Medicaid. Medicare is an essential part of the Social Security system that provides hospitalization insurance for the elderly and permits older Americans to purchase inexpensive coverage for doctor fees and other medical expenses. This division of Social Security covers 40 million people, and is paid for the same way as Social Security is: as a part of your paycheck. Although it is becoming an increasing cost, it is nonetheless important to the American public, and the entire demographic that is made up of the elderly. Medicaid is an equally essential part of public assistance. It is designed to provide health care for poor Americans, that is funded by both the states and the national government. This policy serves 42.7 million Americans. I feel that medicaid is especially essential because it is a means tested program: there are guidelines followed to determine whether an individual and their family are qualified to receive benefits.

    1. I agree with Olivia in saying that we should not eliminate Medicare, but I disagree and say that we should eliminate Medicaid. People that are below the poverty line are more than likely able to get a job that will pay more and give them health insurance, so I believe that the American people who are working very hard should stop having to pay for the people who are receiving those benefits of health insurance but not working hard. I do believe though that we should keep Medicare because it provides health insurance for the elderly, who are more than likely unable to work, and therefore we should pay for their health insurances to keep them healthy and happy.

    2. I think we should get rid of both Medicare and Medicaid. But hear me out. These programs need to be thrown out and redesigned. I believe there is a better, more effective way to carry out these type of social programs.Social programs like these, need to be redone in order to keep up with society and the way the healthcare field is evolving.
