Ch 4 - Freedom of Religion

What is the 'establishment clause'?
What is the 'free exercise clause'?
Do you agree or disagree with these ideas contained in the first amendment?

  1. The "establishment clause" as stated in the edwards textbook defines it as "part of the first amendment stating that 'Congress shall make no law respecting and establishment of religion.'" (pg 105) The "free exercise clause" as stated in the edwards textbook defines is as "a first amendment provision that prohibits government from interfering with the practice of religion." (pg 105) I agree with these ideas contained in the first amendment because everyone should be able to believe in what they want, as long as it isn't hurting anyone. These ideas help restrict the government from controlling our thoughts and allow us to have our own opinion and beliefs that cannot be taken from us.

    1. I agree with the ideas contained in the first amendment because if citizens in our country didn't have the freedom to worship or be a part of whatever religion they wanted then they would be denied freedoms that everyone should be able to have. Our country is one based on freedom, I think that these ideas follow our country's basis of freedom and citizens are pleased with not having to all be a part of one, national religion.

  2. I also agree with these ideas contained in the 1st amendment. This country was founded on those seeking religious freedom from Britain. So it would be entirely too hypocritical if the right to worship freely was not guaranteed in today's society. People deserve to worship whatever they please as well as abstain from worship practices if they so desire. It is not fair for a government to establish a national religion that is to be forced upon each citizen.
