Ch 1 - Youth and Following Political Affairs

Most young people don't value politics and / or aren't interested in government. Is this a true or false statement? What stats back up your belief?

  1. I believe this is a true statement because statistically, young people (18-24) had the lowest voter turnout of all the age groups who are eligible to vote in the 2008 and the 2012 presidential elections.

    1. I think that is a false statement because I don't believe you can measure someone's involvement only on percentage of voter turnout and just political ideology questions. Today's youth is interested in politics and that extends beyond the election polls whether it be in class, in their community, or with their peers. Political Insight states, "For instance, it is not clear what proportion of the 42% of young people with no interest in politics have ever signed an e-petition or taken part in a protest. They may well have done so, but simply do not see this act a as political one."

    2. I disagree, I do not think that young people are completely apathetic towards government. The reason the older half of the population is heavily involved in the government is due to there ability to know and understand how policies and who they vote for will effect them. But as people get older they begin to realize how they can influence policy and how policy influences them.

    3. I agree with the statement because according to the Edwards book in 2004 young people only answered one out of every three questions right. On the other hand people over the age of 65 were correct more than half the time. Which shows a direct pattern, when looking at the previous test in 1964 when there was virtually no age gap, that youth are becoming disinterested in politics.

  2. I agree with Cassidy. People our age tend to not be interested in what is going on with politics. The older you get, the more you involved with politics, especially with for seniors ages 65 and over because they care about receiving money from Medicare and adults who are defined as poor by the government need funding from Medicaid. So it is more important to older men and women what is happening to our government because they care about the fundings they need like healthcare and welfare.
