Ch 6 - Melting Pot Theory

Should the U.S. attempt to be a "Melting Pot" or a "Salad Bowl"? Explain.

  1. I believe the US should attempt to be a melting pot. The reason I love living in this country is because our culture is based off all cultures around the world. We have all different types of food, customs, music, people from all across the world, you can't find it anywhere else in the world. Some of my favorite musicians, athletes, and foods were not created in America.

I agree that the U.S. should attempt to be a "melting pot" because we should embrace all cultures. Part of the reason why the U.S. is so unique is because we have so many people that come from different backgrounds here and it's what brings us together. A "salad bowl" would mean that the people from different cultures should stay restricted in their culture but a "melting pot" would allow the U.S. citizens to educate each other on cultures from around the world instead of being confined to their own background. A "melting pot" allows everyone to share a little bit of each other's heritage and allows everyone to be represented in the U.S. because there is something in almost every culture that one can say that they enjoy and participate in.This allows the U.S. to take cultures from everyone and turn it into one, gigantic unique culture from everyone.

    2. I agree with you on that the U.S. should attempt to be a "melting pot." I would add that there are many ways in which we can accomplish this. First, we can create education systems that include classes on different ethnic backgrounds and religions. This way, people can eliminate prejudice and stereotypes that can get in the way of achieving a "melting pot." Having a "salad bowl" would include those stereotypes and prejudices allowing that gap between each culture. If people were educated, I think that becoming a "melting pot" is very plausible.

    3. 1. I agree that our country should try to be a melting pot. I think that beginning able to experience all the different cultures is what makes America so unique. I believe that our country is still making many strides to be more of a “melting pot.” Having a “salad bowl” would keep America from being the country it is. Each race and each person would be closed off to all of the races and cultures that there is to experience in this country and in other countries. Being able to be a part of other people’s cultures and being able to open my mind and learn about people and beliefs that I would otherwise know nothing about is really cool to me. I think you are all right when you say the reason out country is so great is because we are such a “melting pot”

    4. Although a “melting pot” would make the United States unique, I disagree that the U.S. should attempt to be a “melting pot”. Instead, I think the U.S. should attempt to be more of a “salad bowl”. With a “salad bowl” the people of the U.S. would still be able to be who they are without having to adapt to the other cultures. If everyone had to adapt to all of the cultures, like in a “melting pot”, people may start to forget who they really are and their culture. In a “salad bowl” people can acknowledge and accept the other cultures but not necessarily have to adapt to them. This would allow people to stay true to who they are and to their culture. Also, remaining as a “salad bowl” may cause less tension between people because then they aren’t pressured to adopt the other culture’s ways and, therefore; will be able to appreciate each other’s cultures more.

    5. I believe that the United States should be a "salad bowl". In a "melting pot", individual cultures are lost, and we should not forget that the United States is a nation of immigrants who escaped other countries to practice their own beliefs. These people should not be pressured to give up their identity to adapt to our culture. In a "salad bowl", the people are intertwined, but they do not lose their individuality. In a salad, the parts are different, and they do not mix together, but they are not alone. A salad is not a bowl of lettuce, tomatoes, cheese, and dressing, it is a salad. In the same way, the United States is not a county of whites, blacks, Hispanics, and Arabs, it is a country of Americans.

    6. While Emily and Jarett's comments both made me realize the advantages of a "salad bowl" America, I still support the idea of America being a "Melting Pot". I feel as though a melting pot is a great way to integrate others into society as highly functioning members as well as allow the population to experience ethnicity at all of its full potential. I feel as though in our society today a "Salad Bowl" would make people feel excluded, after all you can clearly tell the tomatoes in a salad and can pick them out all you want. I would not want any culture to be picked out of America, I believe all cultures should be engrained within American to where you can't even began to 'rid' ourselves of a specific culture.
