Ch 6 - Reapportionment

How does reapportionment work? How has it affected U.S. government and politics?

  1. Reapportionment is the process of reallocating seats in the House of Representatives every ten years based on the results of the census. The process and practice of reapportionment have several effects on the government and politics of the United States in several ways. For example, as a state grows in size or its population decreases, seats of the House of Representatives for that state are adjusted accordingly. The practice of reapportionment can affect each community and can also change how decisions are made on important issues as education, healthcare, housing, transportation and the environment. Since reapportionment is used in our governmental and political system, the census has a profound effect on how we choose our nation’s leaders.

  3. I agree with olivia in the fact that reapportionment affects politics because there is a very strict competition to own these seats from the political parties so through any means they will try to flood these areas getting reapportioned so they have the most influence.
