Ch 10 - Civic Duty

What is 'civic duty'? Is civic duty alive and well in the United States today?

  1. As said on page 313 of the Edward's textbook, civic duty is "the belief that in order to support democratic government, a citizen should always vote.". Civic duty is not alive and well in the United States today because many people believe that their vote will not make a difference. If more and more American people start to believe that their vote will not make a difference then the democratic United States will be left to turmoil. Most people believe that their vote is just as little as a grain of rice but when a person does their civic duty they are helping preserve the democracy. Civic duty is not alive and well in the U.S today, but it needs to be so that the democracy that we have is preserved.

    1. I agree that most people believe that their vote hardly counts in the grand scheme of things. But I do believe that the idea of "civic duty" still exists. Several people I know, for example, vote because they believe it is their responsibility to do so. When I was called for a "short survey" over the phone (they lied, it was not short) I was asked what my reason for voting was. My answer, which they wrote down word for word, was that I believed voting was my civic duty and if I don't vote, then I don't have a say. Perhaps a solution to this problem would be to educate children and young adults in schools and colleges about voting and give real examples that prove their vote can indeed make a difference.

    3. I agree with Eli and I do not think that civic duty is alive and well today in the United States. On page 312 of the Edwards book it says “in 2008, 61 percent of adult citizens voted in the presidential election.” If only 61% of people vote during presidential elections than the percentage of people who vote during primaries and caucuses is much lower. Voter turnout in America is one of the lowest in the world. In the Edwards book on page 10 it says,”America does quite poorly when judged by its voter turnout, with one of the lowest rates of voter participation in the world.” If civic duty was alive and well in the United States today, there would be a much higher voter turnout but many people do not think that their vote will matter in the overall outcome of the election so do not take the time to vote.
