Ch 2 - Constitutional Plans

If forced to pick from the Virginia Plan or teh New Jersey Plan, which would you select and why?

  1. If forced to pick between the Virginia Plan and the New Jersey Plan, I would pick the Virginia Plan because it called for representation of each state in Congress in proportion to that state’s share of the U.S. population. The New Jersey Plan only called for representation of each state regardless of the state’s population. Representation between states of two very different populations through the New Jersey Plan would not be well represented. For instance, Wyoming and California have the same number of votes in the Senate, although Wyoming has less than 2 percent of California’s population. Thus, a citizen of Wyoming has less than 50 times the representation in the Senate as does a citizen of California. There are places where greater numbers of people live which should be the leading factor in representation, rather than solely by individual states. (Edwards 43).

    1. I agree, I would also pick the Virginia Plan over the New Jersey Plan because the Virginia Plan follows a democracy and allows equal representation to each state no matter what their population may be. Luckily, we would not be forced to pick between the two plans today thanks to Roger Sherman and William Johnson who eventually solved the conflict between the Virginia Plan and the New Jersey plan with the Great Compromise.

    2. I agree with Danielle and Maggie that I would choose the Virginia Plan because it more equally represents the people of America. Under the New Jersey plan, with equal representation of all states, people who live in small states would have a more weighted vote than those who live in much larger states. Also, I agree because the New Jersey plan called for only a unicameral legislature, which meant only one house in Congress, while the Virginia plan called for two houses.

    3. I agree with all Danielle, Maggie, and Sydney because just as they have previously stated the Virginia Plan allowed a better overall representation of America. I also like how the Virginia Plan called for a bicameral legislature, whereas the New Jersey Plan called for a unicameral legislature with only one house.

  2. I disagree, I would choose the New Jersey Plan because there should be fair and equal representation for each state. It is unfair for smaller and/or less populated states when choosing Virginia Plan because they wouldn't be able to have a "voice" in Congress. Each state should have a fair chance when representing the public

    1. I would agree with Laura and choose the New Jersey Plan because as Laura said it gives each state and equal representation. But, Along with the New Jersey Plan it came with resolutions for the Articles of Confederation. One of the resolutions was it gave Congress the power to tax. This would have helped America a lot at the time. Some of the resolutions would have been a big help.
