Some political beliefs that "conservatives and liberals" hold dear are: liberals "believe we should spend less" on the military, "view government as a regulator in the public interest" therefore favoring a strong national government, "want to tax the rich more", and "want to spend more on the poor". Conservatives "believe we should maintain peace through strength" by supporting our military financially, "favor free-market solutions" by wanting a less involved national government, "want to keep taxes low" for the rich, and "want to keep spending low" on the poor. (pg. 202 Edwards book)

    1. These beliefs of the conservatives and liberals are accurate but some other beliefs of the liberals are: they are less likely to commit troops to war, they support the "freedom of choice" when it comes to abortions, and they believe that we should guard defendants' rights carefully. Other beliefs of the conservatives are: that they are supportive of military intervention around the world, they support the "right to life" when it comes to abortion, and they think we should stop letting criminals hide behind the law.

    2. In a more broad and general stance, the beliefs of conservatives and liberals can be categorized based on their openness to the idea of change. The definition of "liberal" is "open to new behavior or opinions and willing to discard traditional values". The definition of "conservative" is "averse to change and holds to traditional values and attitudes". Liberals are generally more forward thinking, while conservatives tend to want to keep things the way that they have been in the past.

  2. When it comes to Affirmative action, liberals tend to believe minorities have been discriminated against in the past, subjecting them to miss out on opportunities in employment, education, etc. Therefore, liberals tend to favor affirmative action to help equalize the employment field. Conservatives tend to believe jobs should be awarded to those who have the best ability, regardless of gender, race, etc. Meaning that they typically oppose affirmative action. I think this expands on what Olivia was saying: Liberals are apt to change and are open to new ideas, whereas conservatives try to keep things the way they have in the past.

    1. When it comes to the market, liberals favor more of a regulated market, where the government controls some of the economy while conservatives believe in free market systems. When it comes to education, Liberals tend to favorite public schools while Conservatives believe people should have vouchers to schools that students want public or private and receive the education they need.
