Ch 2 - Expanding Suffrage

Which amendment expanding suffrage (15th, 19th, 23rd, 24th or 26th) do you think was most important?

  1. I think that the 19th amendment was the most important amendment that expanded suffrage. I think the 19th amendment was the most important because it gave women the right to vote after a long struggle that began years before at the Seneca Falls Convention. Women began to be granted the same rights as men and after the 19th amendment was passed, everyone was allowed to vote. Allowing women to vote expanded the scope of the government and changed many things such as the way politicians campaign.

While I absolutely agree that the nineteenth amendment was monumental, I believe that the 26th amendment was the most important. The 26th amendment gave suffrage to people of the age of eighteen. This was important because this was when eighteen year olds were being drafted to go die in the Vietnam war. They were forced to place themselves in the draft and fight for a country that they didn't even get a say in. They couldn't vote on which president they would being fighting under in the war or even state issues. This was the most important amendment because it finally gave teenagers a little power. It allowed them to at least put their "two cents" in before dying for a country that thinks they're old enough to fight but not old enough to express their opinions for voting. This amendment was most important because it gave eighteen year olds a little hope that things could change for them.

    2. Yes, both the 19th and 26th amendments were extremely important in American history, but I personally think that the 15th amendment was most important. The 15th amendment gave African Americans the right to vote which ultimately paved the way for future minority groups to be extended the right to vote. African Americans were the first publicly discriminated group to be granted suffrage, so it showed and gave the American people more hope and confidence in gaining everyone's right to vote. If it wouldn't have been for the 15th Amendment, no other group besides white males would have the right to vote today. It was an amendment that paved the way for other amendments not to discriminate against others based on the way they looked.

    3. All of these amendments are important, but focusing on the 24th amendment specifically I would like to say that I feel it expanded the rights of suffrage tremendously by extending the rights of those eligible to vote to presidential primaries and elections to those who were previously unable to afford it by outlawing poll taxes. This allowed women, men, and African Americans who were poor to vote, opening up a whole new demographic of voters to the political process.

    5. I believe that all the amendment’s that extended suffrage where important. They helped make huge strides in expanded our country but personally I believe that the 24th amendment was the most important. I think that this was so important because at the time 18 year olds where fighting for a country that they could have no say in decisions for. I think that the 24th amendment made teenagers feel more included in the whole process, I think that it also made it easy to fight for the country. Allowing a teenager to have a little power in the process can also encourage them to want to defend the country that they represent.

    6. While the 15th, 19th, 24th, and 26th amendments are essential to the United States, I believe that the 23rd is on par with them in that they still include an overlooked part of America, the District of Columbia. D.C is part of the U.S, but not as a state, as a territory. The peoples of D.C are aware that they do not get the same rights as the rest of the U.S citizens when it comes to things like taxes. D.C does not get representation in their district but they still have to pay taxes, hence their license plates saying, "Taxation Without Representation." I feel that the 23rd amendment does something that the rest of the U.S should be focusing on, true equal representation in the government.

  3. All the amendments including suffrage are important, but i believe the most important of the specific five amendments is the 24th. While the other amendments gave privileges to those who were lacking the right to vote without the abolishment of the poll tax many could have still discriminated against the lower classes of women and African Americans. I also agree with the points Olivia made previously about opening up a whole demographic of voters.
