Ch 6 - Political Ideology

What are the major differences between 'conservatives' and 'liberals'?

  1. The major differences between conservatives and liberals are religion, gender, and age. Today, Jews remain by far the most liberal demographic group in the country compared to those who identify as born-again Christians, the most conservative demographic group. On the other hand, people who say they have no religious affiliation are more liberal than conservative. An ideological difference between men and women has led to the creation of the gender gap, which refers to the regular pattern by which women are more likely to support Democratic candidates. Women tend to be significantly less conservative than men and are more likely to support spending on social services and to oppose higher levels of military spending. And also, the younger the individual, the less likely that person is to be a conservative. The fact that younger people are also less likely to vote means that conservatives are overrepresented at the polls. (Edwards 201-202).

    1. I agree with all of the above statements of the differences between the conservatives and liberals. I think that other major differences between the liberals and conservatives are that liberal policies emphasize the need for the government to solve problems and don't support a strong national defense. Conservatives believe in personal responsibility, limited government, and a strong national defense.
