Ch 2- The Constitution Creates a Senate

The Senate is based on a quota system that promises that every state, regardless of size, population, or wealth, will have equal representation. Is this fair?

  1. Having a Senate that is based on a quota system promising that every state, regardless of size, population, or wealth will have equal representation is fair. If the Senate had state representation based on a state's size, population, or wealth, then some states would have a great deal of representatives, whereas other states would have only a few, if that. For example, if one state was among the wealthiest in the country and a poorer state disagreed with them, it would hardly matter that they disagreed with the wealthier state. This is because the wealthier state would be able to vote on, and pass, pretty much whatever it wanted, since the poorer state doesn't have as many representatives. Therefore, all states should have the same number of representatives in the Senate. Also, the United States promotes equality, as stated in the Declaration of Independence, "all men are created equal", so why can't the states be created equal (in terms of their representation)?

    1. I agree and think that the quota system in the Senate is fair. I think it’s fair because if states had representation based on size, population or wealth then the more powerful states would be able to make all of the decisions. The Senate allows the opinions of smaller states to be heard and allows them to have an equal say in legislation which is important so they do not get overshadowed by the larger and more powerful states. On http://www.senate.gov it states that, “The framers of the Constitution created the United States Senate to protect the rights of individual states and safeguard minority opinion in a system of government designed to give greater power to the national government.” I think that the Senate is fair because it balances power between large and small states.

  3. I believe that the Senate being on a equal representation quota will not be fair for a couple of reasons. For one if the state has a very large population then having the same say of a state with half your population would be completely unfair because you represent a larger group meaning you should have more representation the smaller states. Also if a wealthier state has the same say in policy as a poor state, then the rich state has its policies completely countered by the views of the poor state.
