Ch 3 - Dual Fedralism or Cooperative Federalism

What is the difference between dual federalism and cooperative federalism? Can you think of any examples to illustrate your point?

  1. Dual Federalism is a system of government where both the state and the national government remain supreme is their own spheres, and do not interfere with one another, whereas cooperative federalism is a system of government in which powers and policy assignments are shared between the state and the national government. Dual federalism is viewed as a layered cake, each layer separate from the others, as the responsibilities are in dual federalism. Cooperative federalism is looked at as a marble cake, responsibilities and assignments mixed as different colors are in the cake. (Edwards 82-84)
