  1. For a modern United States, a federal system is the best option. In a federal system responsibilities are shared between different levels of government. This decentralizes our national government and creates more opportunity for political participation for the people, making society more democratic. Unitary governments have all of the power residing in the national government and very little to none residing with state governments. This allows the national government to control nearly all aspects of policy. Furthermore, a confederate system of government resides nearly all power in the states, which has been proven in the past to be too weak and ineffective in the U.S. (the Articles of Confederation). 1. I agree that a federal system is the best option for a modern United States. Having a system of shared power between units of government works sort of like checks and balances-- one "branch" or "power" cannot become too powerful. Federalism means that we are subject to the formal authority of both state and national governments. A federal system is also well suited for the modern United States because most federal systems are democracies (although, most democracies are not federal systems).

    2. I feel that a unitary government would make a modern US more efficient. This would allow for a more productive law making process. With so many people and states the policy making process is diversified over so many institutions, it can take years for policies to make their way through the system. So a unitary government would allow for policy to make its way more efficiently, making it the best option. Federal systems work for smaller countries.
