Ch 6 - Younger Voters

What are some reasons why younger people tend to vote less than older people. Are these reasons legitimate?

  1. A few reasons why younger people tend to vote less than older people are that: young people are less interested in politics than older people, younger people don't feel that they can make a difference in society, young people change their addresses more often and may not want to re-register to vote, older people have a vested interest in protecting Medicare and Social Security, and older people more often have time on their hands because they are most likely retired and don't have to go to college or work. These reasons are legitimate because they support that younger people vote less and suggest that interest in politics and convenience play a big role in who shows up to vote.

    1. Voter apathy is indeed a large problem in younger voters and I think that it is important that political education of younger generations begins earlier. This way, voter turnout will be higher for younger people. The more young people understand the political process and its importance within their lives, hopefully the more likely they will be to participate in it.

    2. I don't truly buy in to these reasons because the fact that politics don't matter to the majority of younger people. If younger voters wanted to make time and wanted to research politics they could, it wouldn't be hard at all. It just comes down to laziness and disinterest.

    3. No reason for not voting is legitimate to me. Many people complain that the government is not doing enough, or isn't making policies that benefit them, but some of the people that complain don't go out and vote. Young people are the worst because in addition to the lower policy efficacy and generally being "busier," young people in recent years have also claimed to have been so frustrated by the activities of the government that they are refusing to vote. To me, this seems to achieve nothing. While they are out not voting, new policies are being made that affect them, and these young nonvoter protesters and not voting, so no new people can be elected to an office, and so nothing changes. Young people also claim they "can't" vote because they don't know enough about politics. In my opinion these people need to learn about that society that they are living in, and understand the government that is all around them. People come across things that are impacted by government everyday, so the youth of America should learn about this government.
