  1. The four major ways interest groups try to influence public policy in the American political system are by lobbying, electioneering, litigation, and going public. The first way, lobbying, is when interest groups target Congress through research, money, and testimonies; target bureaucratic agencies and the president; and lobby courts through sponsorship or amicus curiae briefs. The second way, litigation, is when interest groups file amicus curiae briefs to influence a court's decision. The third way, electioneering, is when interest groups help candidates get elected to offices and Political Action Committees (PACs) donate money to candidates (most going to incumbents). The fourth and final way, going public, is when interest groups try to cultivate a good public image, build a public good will, and use advertisements to motivate people.

    1. I feel that the most effective method used by interest groups to influence public policy in the American political system is “going public”. The mass media is a huge and important tool that should be utilized in a positive manner by any group that wants to get things done. By “going public” interest groups use the media to cultivate a positive image for their position on a certain topic. Advertisements, both on the radio, television or in public spaces, have proven to be very effective when spreading a message: people will inevitably see them.

    2. I believe that the most effective method used by interest groups is electioneering. Simply because in this situation, a candidate is hand selected based on his/her views that are likely in coherence with the interest group, and so when he/she is elected, the interest group has an insider who has correlating views. This method has a direct effect on the government directly, whether through legislation or another mean.

    3. I believe that lobbying is the most important method used by interest groups because the interest groups are able to try to directly persuade policymakers to make decisions that will benefit themselves and what they stand for.

    4. I feel that litigation is the most effective way interest groups can influence public policy. Litigation is the use of courts to influence policy. Lobbyists can input "amicus curie" briefs, aka "friend of the court" briefs that can be submitted my interest groups that raise additional points of view on a case and present information not contained in the briefs that may be useful in determining the outcome of a case. For example, an interest group like AARP, in a case involving the constitutionality of social security, could submit a brief that shows their viewpoint on the case and raises additional views that would work to help prove social security as constitutional and necessary.

  2. I agree with Avery, I think lobbying is the most effective method used by interest groups. Lobbying not only is used to persuade policymakers, but it also gives informative information about specific topics, and provides endorsements which allow interest groups to be associated with popular political figures.
