There are many formal powers of the Speaker of the House that make it such a powerful position. One of these powers is the power to designate certain bills to certain committees. The Speaker can choose what committee to send bills to, so they can make the best decision for their party, and can hopefully find a committee that will support their party's viewpoint and follow the voice of the Speaker. Also, the Speaker has the power to preside over the House when in session. This is important because this gives the Speaker the power to be the commander and "watchdog" of all meetings and debates. Another formal power that the Speaker of the House has is the power to appoint the party's leadership. This is important because the Speaker can appoint news heads of committees and groups to choose who has control over creating new legislation, and they can choose people with similar policy goals to them, giving them a lot of power. The last formal role of the Speaker of the House is the power to make committee assignments. (Edwards)
I think the power of the Speaker of the House to assign certain bills to certain committees is the most important power because it allows for movement in Congress's agenda and without movement, Congress would be stuck on issues for months at a time.
