Ch 8 - What is ticket splitting? What role does it play in American politics?

  1. Ticket splitting is when a voter splits their votes between the parties.(Some votes are for republican candidates, others are for democratic candidates) This idea causes a more individualized campaign. In American politics, this weakens party loyalty. It also causes a higher chance of having a majority of Congress and the president being members of different parties. This causes a difficult process of passing policies even more difficult.

  2. "When voters split their tickets or produce divided government, it is common to attribute the outcome as a strategic verdict or a demand for partisan balance" -Robert Erikson, Columbia University (www.pressumich.edu)
This basically means that one possible reason voters split their tickets is because they want some kind of moderate party instead of one that is really extreme on one end of the scale and another that is really extreme on the other end of the scale.

  3. Although I agree that spilt ticket voting decreases party loyalty, I think that it is important that we allow it. I think that it prevents a party from becoming too powerful and allows us to have a moderate or mutual government where most people feel like they are represented.

  4. Ticket splitting shows that the two political parties are becoming more and more individualized. As these parties separate, their platforms become less moderate. The way that voters split their ticket shows that the two parties should attempt to move towards a moderate viewpoint as the number of moderate voters is growing and party loyalty is decreasing.
