As far as gender, race, religion, education, and occupation congress is not represented. Congress is heavily white males. This is not representative of the United States. "85% of congress is white.". Congress is also dominated by lawyers while 41% of congress is lawyers. In the big picture this should not matter because congress members are elected by the people so everybody should have a say. These people should also be looking out for the best interest of the people not matter what their race, occupation or gender is.
I agree that congress is not representative of the United States. I also believe that it matters. Although it should not matter, since Congress men and women are elected to look out for the best interest of the people, I believe that people of the same gender, race, religion, education, and occupation are more likely to have a similar mindset when making decisions. People who vary in these descriptions are naturally raised differently and would more accurately represent the United States in Congress. I do, however, believe that no one should be elected solely on their gender, race, etc. and that they must meet all necessary qualifications and be truly fitting for the job.
