Do you think there will be a 'critical election' that will cause 'party realignment' in 2016? Explain your answer.

  1. I do not think that the election in 2016 will be a critical election that will cause a party realignment because most critical elections occur when there has been a catastrophe. So far in the U.S, there hasn't been one that has caused an uproar in American politics. If something happens that causes an, "earthquake" in politics, then I could see a critical election happening.

    1. I disagree, I think that this will cause a party realignment. I feel that our country is at a pivotal point. There have been major events happening all around us, from hate crimes to terrorist attacks. The next election will set the trajectory of our country and how we respond to the world around us. This election's outcome will definitely cause a party realignment if the either of the forerunners win.

    3. I agree with Allie, not only because of the culture war going on around us and the numerous terrorist attacks and debate over controversial policies that were passed in the last Obama administration, but also because of the shift of the Republican party and leaning more Conservative, and the Democratic party as leaning more and more liberal. This is causing a major divide in the country, where more and more people are voting with split tickets, and declaring themselves independent. This major divide among parties will force these independents to make important decisions in the presidential election, closing between a highly liberal or high conservative side. Also, the two forerunners for the Republican party are both outsiders, Trump being the most outside and not having any prior experience in government, and so the Republican party can see the weakening of the Establishment and the move toward an outside representative. The main aspect of the 2016 election however, that will cause the "critical election" is the fact that the republicans are becoming more extremists and the democrats are too, causing a major party divide. Also possibly contributing to a realignment could be the strong leadership in both parties and the controversial points each candidate brings to the table, that will cause a divide among voters. rollingstone.com and Edwards book
