Ch 17 - The Minimum Wage

Should the United States have a 'minimum wage'?
If not, explain why not.
If so, explain why and who- the federal or state government- should set the minimum wage?

  2. I think that it is important to have a minimum wage. I think minimum wage mostly hangs on the idea that firms have a responsibility to ensure that their workers earn enough to live on. If a firm can’t pay its workers enough to live on, then it isn’t a viable business, because it is dependent on wage subsidies. I think that it is important that we don’t allow business to take advantage of their employees. If we don’t pay people enough to live on then how do we expect people to stop depending on the government for everything? I believe that the power to create a minimum wage should rest in the states. I think that most decisions should rest in the states.

    1. I agree that the states should set minimum wage. The cost of living varies by state therefore the minimum wage should be able to support individuals in the areas where they live. For example the cost of living in New York city is greater than that of Dayton. Minimum wage may be enough to support an individual in Dayton but not enough for someone living in New York City.

    2. I agree that minimum wage is a necessary thing that should be implemented in the United States. Minimum wage makes is possible for young high school and college age students, with minimum skills, to be able to earn a regular income and begin to support themselves. While I agree that the minimum wage should continue to be implemented in the United States, I also feel that it should be raised for adults who are between jobs and need enough money to be able to support their already established family.

    3. I agree with everyone in saying that there should be a minimum wage but I believe that the minimum wage should be much lower than what it is right now. I believe that the minimum wage is what high schoolers should earn when trying to save up for their future plans, but I do not believe that it should be an everyday career. I believe that all everyday careers should be earning way more than the minimum wage set in place, and if it is not then it is not a job that should be an everyday career that someone is living their life off of. Long story short, I believe there should be a minimum wage, but it should be lowered.

    5. While I agree with everybody here, I have to stay I believe it is the states job to set minimum wage. I do agree that we should push people into higher paying jobs, but unfortunately we can't save everybody. People need service workers, and teenagers do not fill up all the positions needed. If the minimum wage is lowered significantly, its as if the United States and the states themselves are turning their backs on the uneducated/underprivileged.
