Ch 8 - Tasks of a Political Party

Which role of a political party is most important?

  1. I think the role of a political party that is most important is that the parties pick the candidates. Without candidates there would be nobody that the people could vote for. "Almost no one above the local level gets elected to a public office without winning a party's endorsement." (Edwards 249) This proves that without party's, candidates would have a very hard time getting elected. Now that voters can give input on which candidates they want to win, more candidates can be nominated that the people support and believe in.

    1. While I agree with your response I think the most important role of political parties is to develop policies. Political parties policies influence the government through their candidates and voters. Without creating policies it would be difficult to get support for the party and candidates.

    2. I agree with Cassidy, I think that the most important role of political parties is to develop policies instead of picking candidates. Picking candidates is great but if those candidates do not accomplish anything while in office or their party then the effort to get that candidate in office was a waste.

    3. I believe that the most important role of political parties is the development of the party's platform. Many voters select a party consistently based on how the party is typically run. With a consistent platform, parties can attract blocs of voters.

  2. Cassidy and Austin do have a point, without making policies and objectives, what would make up the political party? Without a purpose of the political party, there is no point in having one. And also picking candidates is just "representing" the political party. Sure the party needs an image but what the party stands for is more important.

  3. While I do agree that it is important for political parties to create policies and select candidates, I think it the most important task that political parties perform is bringing the people of the country together to achieve control of the government. Political parties are designed to represent constituents. It is very important that every single person has the opportunity to participate in the government in one way or another. That is they key to democracy. Political parties allow this to happen because citizens can serve on the party team, campaign for their party or express their opinion in order to possibly influence their party. Political parties act as an important linking institution for the American people.
