Ch 17 - Labor and The Federal Government

Define 'collective bargaining'.
Define 'right-to-work' laws.
Explain how the Wagner Act (National Labor Relations Act) and the Taft-Harley Act changed the role of the federal government concerning labor.

According to page 550 of the Edwards book, ‘collective bargaining’ is: “negotiations between representatives of labor unions and management to determine pay and acceptable working conditions. ‘Right-to-work’ laws are statutes that prohibit union security agreements, or agreements between employers and labor unions, that govern the extent to which an established union can require employees’ memberships, payment of union dues, or fees as a condition of employment. The Wagner Act and the Taft-Hartley Act changed the role of the federal government concerning labor by restricting the activities and power of labor unions: it restricted “unfair labor practices”.
