Ch 16 - The U.S. Supreme Court

The Supreme Court has original and appellate jurisdiction, which one is more common and why?
What types of cases does the USSC have original jurisdiction over?

  1. The appellate jurisdiction of the Supreme Court is the one most commonly used. This is because many cases that are heard by the Supreme Court have been appealed to it from lower court decisions. According to page 571 of the Edwards book, the U.S. Supreme Court has original jurisdiction over cases involving foreign diplomats, cases between the United States and a state, cases between two or more states, cases between one state and a citizen of another state, and cases between a state and a foreign country.
