The annual salary for a congressional member is ~$170,000 with benefits. Benefits like retirement and health insurance to be specific. I think this is about right maybe a bit too much. While I agree these are people who make immense decisions that can have widespread effect, I do not believe they deserve $170,000 yearly. I also agree with benefits, as many other employment opportunities come with them, but I think the salary is too high, especially when they are able to vote on whether their own salary should increase or not. And even if they do not vote to increase their salary, through inflation their earnings would technically increase over the years. I suggest a lowering the salary a small amount. I disagree and think that the salary and benefits for members of Congress is just right. Members of Congress make very important decisions that affect millions of people in America. Congress members consider many things when passing legislation which can be very stressful. Being a member of Congress is one of the most important jobs in America because without them, there would be no government which is why they deserve their salary.
I think that the salary for members of Congress is too high, because, as Blake said, they do make decisions on legislation (among other things), but they don't meet very often to discuss decisions to be made and they get to decide when to meet. There are hardworking Americans that don't get to decide when they go into work or decide how much money they make that I'm sure would love to make as much money as Congress members. I agree with Blake that members of Congress should receive benefits, because making legislation and important decisions is part of their job, and businesses often give their employees benefits, so Congress should, too.
