Ch 8 - Linkage Institutions

What are 'linkage institutions'?

  1. Linkage institutions are “the political channels through which people’s concerns become political issues on the policy agenda. In the United States, linkage institutions include elections, political parties, interest groups and the media” (Edwards 11).

    1. To add to this, linkage institutions are the ways in which the government is kept in check by the people. Without linkage institutions, the people would not only be uninformed about what the government is doing, they would be uniformed about what the government isn't doing. In this sense, the government would not be a government by the people.

  2. I think linkage institutions are very important in American democracy, because without linkage institutions, citizens would have a difficult time getting involved in their government. Elections allow people to vote for government officials and people to make beneficial decisions, political parties share ideological positions with citizens, interest groups inform people about policies, and the media helps broadcast what's going on so people can stay better informed.
