Ch 13 - Presidential Prerequisites

What do you think is the best path to the Presidency- Congressional experience? Governorship? Military experience? Business experience? International diplomacy?

  1. I think the best pathway to presidency is congressional experience. I think the president should be an expert on the lawmaking process and know from experience how different functions of the government are performed. Ideally it would be great for a president to have experience in each of those fields. Military experience would prove to be helpful when serving as commander in chief. Business experience would definitely help when planning the budget and would hopefully keep the economy balanced. International experience would assist in important foreign affairs and in war efforts. However none of those skills would be useful if the president did not have any congressional experience to know just how governmental process worked.

    1. In a dream scenario I think that the best way to presidency is with both military and congressional experience. I think for times of war and conflict the military experience would prove invaluable and the public would see this and instantly vote for you. Also part of the job title is commander in chief, and if you don't know how to command, I don't think you could be president. On the other hand which is in times of peace congressional experience would also prove to be invaluable in order to understand the law making process to make your ideas flow smoother.

    2. I disagree with both of you. The best way, in my opinion, to presidency is governorship. While congressional and military experience are great assets for a president to have, governorship plays basically the same role as the presidency just on a smaller scale. Governors deal with legislation, lead the state government, and serve as commander-in-chief of the state's armed forces. Essentially the governor has the same role with a state as the President does with the nation. Therefore having experience as a governor shows the electorate that the candidate can handle those responsibilities, has had experience with an executive office and is familiar with legislative processes and other functions of government.
