Ch 15 - The Hatch Act

  1. The Hatch Act, originally passed in 1939 and amended in 1993, prohibits civil service employees from actively participating in partisan politics while on duty. While off duty they may engage in political activities, but they cannot run for partisan elective officers or solicit contributions from the public. I agree with the Hatch Act because before it was passed, there was a lot of corruption in the electoral system of the United States. Federal employees would run a merit system where they rewarded certain individuals for voting a certain way. And now because of the Hatch Act, this is no longer legal. (Edwards 477)

    1. In addition to Maggie's response, the Hatch Act also prevents conflict of interest in the work place and using ones job to get ahead in the political game or promote candidates he/she supports. The Hatch Act, as Maggie said, eliminates corruption and the election game honest and fair.
