Ch 13 - Presidential Terms

How long is the term for the President?
Which amendment limits to the President to two elected terms?
Do you think we should keep that amendment?

  1. The term for the President is four years. The amendment that limits the President to two elected terms is the 22nd Amendment. I believe we should keep this amendment because it ensures that the President cannot keep power for the remainder of his/her life. It keeps one person from having too much control over the government because new people can be president and share his/her ideas of what would make this country better.

    1. I agree that we should keep the 22nd amendment because it reflects a major part of our nation's founding pillars: we will not have a monarch. When the Founding Fathers wrote the constitution, they were very concerned about having a too-powerful central government. The two-term tradition began with George Washington and was kept until FDR and the Great Depression, after which the 22nd amendment was implemented. This amendment keeps one person from having too much power and establishing a monarchy or dictatorship, therefore protecting the freedom America has today.

    2. I disagree with Mallory and Avery and say that we should not keep the 22nd amendment. While limiting a president to two terms is nice, it can also mean the end of a great presidency. In a situation like our nation is in today, I believe that being able to keep the current president should be an option decided upon in Congress. With the 22nd amendment, the country could have a president that is doing many great things for the country (ex. getting us out of debt) and then have to leave office because of this amendment. I believe that it could help America if the 22nd amendment was rid of.

    4. I agree with Eli’s idea of extending the amount of term limits. Adding to that, I think we should be able to extend the number of terms for a president during times of crisis. If a president is handling a national epidemic extremely well, it would be a shame if he or she had to leave office due to the term limit. If Congress decides that the current state of the country is bad enough for a third or even fourth term to be necessary, I think the president should be allowed to go up for reelection. To prevent corruption it might be a good idea to limit additional terms to two years in case the public changes their minds.

    5. I agree with Eli and Erin. I think that there is no need to limit the president’s term. The American people vote and if they feel like someone is gaining too much power or has been in office too long we won’t keep them in office. I also agree that there have been many great presidents who have handled situations correctly who should’ve and could’ve remained in office if it wasn’t for the 22nd amendment.

    6. I agree with Blake and Mallory. The 22nd amendment does keep the executive power limited. If you could hold that office for life, then we would be in a situation where more corruption would take place. This would leeway to dictatorships and probably lead us back to the political machine type of politics.
