Ch 12 - Term Limits

What are some arguements for and against 'term limits'? What do you think?

  1. Arguments for term limits usually involve monarchy. This is because people don't want our leaders to have power all their lives like monarchs do. They are afraid that if someone has power all their life, that the leader will have too much control over policy. I agree that terms should be limited because we need new ideas. If someone runs the country their whole life, the country is likely to not change very much. New people mean new minds which means new ideas. New ideas lead to more solutions to more problems. We need term limits to make sure that certain people don't carry all of the power as well as to ensure that our country stays developing.

    1. I agree with Avery on that the idea of monarchy plays a big role in why we have term limits. However, I think that another reason we have term limits is because I think that the idea that these policymakers will have to return to ordinary society and live and abide by the rules that they set will help make the policymakers think more carefully before putting a legislation into effect. If they don't want to abide by a law that they passed once they return to ordinary society, then it might stop that bill from being passed in the first place. https://fee.org/articles/why-term-limits/

  2. I agree with both Avery and Melissa. Adding to what they have said, I believe we have term limits in order to limit the corruption of congress. The longer an individual stays in office, the more likely they are to stop serving the public interest. Term limits also encourage regular citizens to run for office. Most people do not want to take the chance of running against an incumbent who has been in office for a long time. If terms are limited, this prevents the same people from running over and over again and therefore encourages ordinary citizens to run for office. Term limits also force politicians to think about the impact of their legislation, since after they are done serving, they must return back to regular society.

    1. I agree with a lot of the things the other people were saying, but the American people do elect the people that go into office and I think that if we felt like there was corruption or anything along those lines we would not put those people back into the office. I think that the election process prevents a lot of corruption because people want to please the public to get back into office.

    2. I feel that term limits are completely necessary in order to ensure that we remain a democratic and fair society. If term limits were not set in place, it would be much easier for a president to manipulate voters and the government into keeping them in office, essentially making us either a dictatorship or a monarchy. Our entire nations foundation was built on representation for the people, by the people, and I feel that if term limits were not regularly implemented, that the United States would lose some of the great virtues it stands for and fail as a “the free world”.
