Ch 9 - Campaign Financing

Is campaign finance reform needed? Explain?

  1. In my opinion, campaign finance reform is needed because it creates limits on campaign spending for individuals which also makes a somewhat "fair" campaign between all candidates because without the campaign finance reform, it would give an advantage to wealthy candidates who could use their own money and not have to totally depend on endorsers and contributions.

    1. I agree with this statement, I think that as of right now with current campaign financing restrictions, wealthy candidates have too much of an advantage over candidates with less resources when it comes to winning the campaign.

    2. I disagree, because in Buckley v Valeo, the Supreme Court ruled that money is a form of speech. If you limit or restrict how much and how you give money, you may be in violation of that ruling.

  3. I agree that campaign finance reform is needed. I think it is needed because then it is limiting the money being spent in the campaign and what the money is being spent on. This would create a more even campaign. If one candidate has a substantial more amount of money than the other candidate then they are at an advantage and can essentially “buy” votes with all of their money. If the campaign finance reform regulates what money is being spent on and how much then it’s more even and then election turns into more about the candidate himself than about how much money they have put into the campaign.
