Ch 13 - Presidential Coattails

Do you think that 'presidential coattails' are still in affect today?

  1. Yes, as many people look to the president for leadership around the nation, they associate the president with his or her party. As the nation takes a downturn in anyway, people blame the president for this decline. They then associate the president with the party, and begin to blame the entire party for the fault. As a result, seats in Congress shift in close races to the opposite party.

  2. I disagree with Jarett in that the coattails are not in effect because often congress and the president are from two different parties, meaning that the political party of the president doesn't really affect voting down the political ladder nearly as much as it used to.
