The different types of committees consist of standing committees, joint committees, conference committees, and select committees. Standing committees are separate subject-matter committees in each house of Congress that handle bills in different policy areas. Joint committees are congressional committees on a few subject-matter areas with membership drawn from both houses. Conference committees are congressional committees formed when the Senate and the House pass a particular bill in different forms and party leadership appoints members from each house to iron out the differences and bring back a single bill. Select committees are congressional committees appointed for a specific purpose. 3 committees in the House include Budget, Ways and Means, and Rules. 3 committees in the Senate include Foreign Relations, Armed Services, and Finance.
